Destination: 'Skillogalee, Clare Valley’
Skillogalee is a boutique family-owned and operated winery located in the heart of the Clare Valley. Established by Dave and Diana Palmer in the early 1970s, the vineyards lie at almost 500 metres above sea level, on shaded, east facing terraces. The winemaking team now comprises father and son, Dan, whilst daughter Nicola runs the cellar door and restaurant. The small, modern winery allows for hand crafted winemaking and small batch ferments. All wines are produced from their own estate fruit and the range includes Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The name "skillogalee" or "skilly" comes from Celtic origins and refers to a thin porridge or gruel. The name was given by early nineteenth century explorer John Horrocks in memory of a failed expedition in 1840, when beset by injuries and bad weather they survived by making a “skilly”.
Skillogalee will be taking part in a “Young Clare” event to feature an evening tasting followed by supper with the winemakers.
