Destination: ‘Pauletts, Polish Hill River’
Polish Hill River is one of the highest point of the Clare Valley and it’s
slate rich soils produce some of Australia’s most famous and long lived
Riesling. The region is named after the Hill River, which itself is named
after a Mr Hill who mapped out the region in the 19th century. Polish
settlers moved to the region in the 1850‘s, so it was the Polish end of the
Hill River Valley. Neil and Alison Paulett bought their property in 1983,
and have grown the vineyard from 47 hectares to 147, helped today by their
son and viticultural manager Matthew Paulett. They specialise in Riesling,
producing a wide range of styles from bone dry to late harvest, single
vineyard, aged release and even sparkling.
A tutored tasting of the sub-regional styles of Riesling found in the Clare Valley, followed by lunch in the Antonina Vineyard, weather permitting.
