Destination: ‘Bests, Great Western’
Best’s Wines was established during the Victorian Gold Rush in 1866 by the
pioneering Henry Best and sold to neighbour and second generation vigneron,
Frederick P Thomson in 1920. Fourth generation vigneron Viv Thomson has
recently handed over the reins to his son and fifth generation Ben Thomson,
but Viv still keeps a close eye on things. A visit to Bests is one of the
highlights of any wine trip to Australia, made memorable by the hand dug
cellars, ancient Shiraz and Pinot Meunier vines and the sheer quality and
age worthiness of their elegant, European styled wines.
Tour of the Concongella vineyard, including the Nursery Block, 1868 Pinot Meunier and Thomson Family Block. Tasting with Viv Thomson and winemaker Adam Wadewitz focusing on Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Shiraz, including the iconic Thomson Family Reserve and museum wines going back to the 70’s
